The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is a fast-paced environment, where nurses are an active participant in patients' perioperative experience. In the PACU, pre-anesthesia screening services (PASS) include comprehensive preoperative anesthesia screenings, and preoperative prep for patients. PASS nurses also provide any necessary educational resources to patients and their family members and facilitate communication with the anesthesia and surgical teams. Peri-anesthesia nurses in the PACU provide care for a diverse population of patients, and have experience dealing with different forms of trauma and multiple surgical specialties. It is imperative that staff members are able to think critically, and have strong assessment, intervention and communication skills.
