Open Heart Step Down is an eight-bed unit that focuses on the post-operative care for those who have undergone cardiac surgery, including cardiac bypass, valve replacement/valve repair, TAVR, catheterizations and more. Staff members on this unit have a collaborative relationship with the cardio surgery team. Staff members of this unit apply a "Take 5" approach to learn about patients and their specific needs. During the "Take 5" process a nurse will sit down with a patient and their family at the beginning of a shift, share the care plan for the shift, and ask if they have any goals or expectations. It is imperative that nurses on this unit have strong communication and critical assessment skills. Telemetry skills are also necessary as the patients on this unit require special monitoring.
Provides safe, age-appropriate patient care, and function as advisor, resource, for patients and their families as a member of the patient care team.
Requirements: Basic professional knowledge; Working knowledge of theory and practice within a specialized field; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required. Microsoft Office Suite; Basic computer skills; Cerner; Synquest; Standard Office Equipment; Medical terminology; Nursing Process skills based on MD Nurse Practice Act; Critical thinking skills; Medical equipment. Maryland Registered Nurse License; American Heart Association CPR Certification.
